7 Things You Didn’t Know about ProFed

Charter from 1933ProFed Federal Credit Union has been a part of northeast Indiana for 81 years. We know a thing or two about helping people with their financial goals. As we’ve grown, we have done some things that might surprise you.

1. Seven founders started our credit union in 1933, at the height of the Great Depression. We opened with $25,000 in assets. It wasn’t easy, but growing up in tough times taught us tenacity, and we’ve thrived ever since. Growing exponentially from that foundation, today we have approximately $371 million in assets.

2. In 1934, the credit union reported $1,430.00 in annual loans. Nobody could have dreamed that, in 75 years, the credit union’s total granted loans would add up to over $1.3 billion.

Banet3. We didn’t have a branch office for the first three decades of the credit union. We operated out of the homes of the treasurers and board members. As you can see in the picture, Treasurer Herb Banet worked from his basement.

Former CEO Barbara Berghoff4. When we opened our main branch on Spy Run in 1969, we hired three employees. One of them, Barbara Berghoff, stayed with us until her retirement almost 40 years later. She worked in nearly every position at the credit union and later became President and CEO.

You may have noticed that we’ve changed our name several times from the original Fort Wayne Teachers Credit Union.
Fort Wayne Community Schools Employees Credit Union (1958)
Professional Federal Credit Union (1986)
Today, we call ourselves ProFed Federal Credit Union.

6. Four different credit unions have merged into ProFed over the past few decades. By welcoming them, we have been able to diversify our members and sponsor groups beyond teachers and schools. This growth allows us to serve you better.

7. ProFed has raised over $250,000 for Riley Hospital for Children. We have awarded $117,000.00 in scholarships to college students and adults returning to school. We are invested in our community and want to aid our scholars toward a bright future.
